Dear Friend,
As we head back into session I wanted to update you all on what I have been doing these past two weeks in the 7th District.

The State of Our Economy
I was honored to participate in the panel discussion on the state of our economy and the state of our Union last Thursday. With small business optimism reaching historic highs and CBO reporting tax cuts are paying for themselves, we can be proud of the strength of our economy, and it was my pleasure to deliver that good news this morning. Thank you all for inviting me to participate!

Addressing Substance Abuse
We recognize the opioid epidemic is still a painful reality for many Virginians which is why I sat down with Civitas Health services to discuss strategies for addressing  substance abuse in our communities. I have personally introduced three bills that would address the epidemic – one passed into law with bipartisan, unanimous support and another that would directly help recovery centers like Civitas. The third bill I’ve introduced would help former addicts find and keep jobs.

Visiting Watkins Centre Memory Care Community
The Pearl at Watkins Centre Memory Care Community in Midlothian offers compassionate care for individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and dementia. On Friday, it was my honor to read to some of the children whose relatives are being treated here. Together, we read an excellent Alzheimer’s primer for children called, “What’s Happening to Grandpa?” – a book I would highly recommend to those with family members suffering from one of these diseases.

Families in Virginia suffering from Alzheimer’s need our help. In my role in Congress, I am doing my part. I was proud to have supported the 21st Century Cures Act, legislation with a goal of accelerating the discovery, development and delivery of new cures for all diseases including Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Wrapping Up Mobile Office Hours
Last Wednesday I held my last mobile office hours for the month of August in Spotsylvania. These office hours have allowed me to listen to concerns from every constituent who signed up to meet with me. These meetings will better help me advocate for you in Washington, and I will continue to listen to you all as I travel throughout the 7th District.

Also last Wednesday I had the chance to sit down with pastors from Spotsylvania for lunch.Thank you to all who joined me and shared your thoughts about what is going on in your community.

Taking Care of Our Veterans
I also met with a large group of representatives from veteran’s organizations active in Virginia’s 7th District. These veterans, as well as other military leaders in our district, have provided counsel to me that have guided my advocacy for key pieces of legislation that would ensure our veterans get the care they need. One of the signature pieces of legislation considered by this Congress was the VA MISSION Act – this bill was signed into law this year. We owe it all our veterans – they sacrificed their bodies and their health to protect us.
