Dear Friend,
The good news about the economy continues to pour in. The numbers are in from August and they are showing great news for Americans. The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index reached a record high this past month, beating the previous record that happened during Reagan’s presidency (you can read about the Index here).
And that's not all, the Labor Department has reported higher than expected job creation figures and average hourly private-sector earnings. Our economy added over 200k jobs last month and average earnings were up 2.9% in August. The unemployment rate remains near record-lows at 3.9% (read more here). And median household income reached an all-time record high.
In the District
On Wednesday, I had the privilege of hosting a human trafficking forum with Rep. Ann Wagner and experts Adam Lee, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Richmond division, and Rosalinda Rivera, the CEO and executive director of New Life for Youth. I want to thank Rep. Wagner for coming to Henrico to talk about our efforts to stop sex trafficking online, to raise awareness on the trafficking issue, and to highlight all of the efforts being made here in our community to end this modern day slavery. You can read more about the event here.
Visitors in Washington
On Thursday, Rev. Rosalinda Rivera from New Life Outreach Church in Chesterfield delivered the prayer for the House of Representatives. You have blessed so many lives and it was an honor to have you as our guest this morning. You can watch her prayer by clicking here.
It’s always a pleasure when constituents drop by my office to say “hello." Thanks for stopping in!
Cutting Wasteful Spending
Last week, Representative Ralph Norman (SC-05) and I announced the launch of the Congressional Waste-Cutters Caucus.
The new caucus’s mission will be to highlight instances of wasteful federal spending and offer amendments during the appropriations process that would eliminate wasteful spending. The caucus also calls on leadership to reform the appropriations process so that members will have enough time to review spending packages and ensure taxpayer money is being spent responsibly. You can read more about the caucus in my press release.
