Dear Friend,
Now that Congress is back in session I wanted to update you all briefly on what has been happening in DC these past two weeks.
Meetings in Washington
Last week, I had a great meeting with constituents from Henrico and Powhatan from CASE (Council for Administrative Special Education) and CEC (Council for Exceptional Children) where we discussed mental health support for students as well as the need for special education teachers.
I also had the privilege of meeting with young constituents from Richmond from Girl Up. In our meeting, we discussed ways to strengthen the judicial systems in some developing countries to ensure women who are victims of violence receive justice. This is a serious issue, and I’m thankful to see such strong, young women taking a stand for justice.
I always enjoy the opportunity to show constituents around the Capitol. Thanks to the Hook family for coming up and visiting!
Did you know over 70% of all the freight tonnage is moved by trucks? Thanks to reps from the American Trucking Association from Chesterfield for coming to my office to discuss key industry issues regarding how to improve federal regulation of interstate commerce.
On Wednesday, I had a meeting with NFED (National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasias) to discuss how we can help support those living with disorders like Ectodermal Dysplasias. Thank you all for taking the time to raise my awareness on this important issue.
The opioid epidemic continues to be a painful reality for many Virginians. I had the privilege of sitting down with Doctor Moeller, Dr. Terplan, and Dr. Dewey who specialize in addiction research for VCU. I will continue to seek out steps we need to take to help those suffering from addiction, and I am grateful for the chance to hear from the experts in this field.
Agriculture is a significant part of the 7th district economy, and I am proud to represent so many hardworking farm families. I appreciated hearing from the Virginia Grain Producers Association about the Farm Bill and other key issues.
Supreme Court Nomination
Last week President Trump appointed Judge Kavanaugh as the next Supreme Court justice. Judge Kavanaugh is the one of the most qualified individuals in the country to be nominated to serve on the Supreme Court. He has enjoyed a long, impressive career of public service, including clerking for Justice Kennedy, and his record demonstrates a commitment to impartiality and faithful adherence to the U.S. Constitution. You can read my press release by clicking here.
Supporting ICE
On Wednesday I was proud to join my colleagues in the House of Representatives approving a resolution expressing support for the officers and personnel who carry out the important mission of ICE. You can read the full statement on my website here.
*Last week’s newsletter highlighted a ribbon cutting ceremony, but failed to note that it celebrated the name change from Health South to Encompass Health. It was an honor to join them for the occasion, and I look forward to continuing the relationship.
