Deep Run High School student wins Seventh District Congressional Art Competition

GLEN ALLEN (May 11, 2015) – Congressman Dave Brat announced today that Henrico County’s Hannah Granger won first place in the Seventh Congressional District's Congressional Art Competition.  Granger’s artwork will be displayed with the works of other winners from around the country for one year at the U.S. Capitol.

The Deep Run High School senior was recognized last week at an event hosted by Capitol One in Glen Allen for all the young artists who submitted work.  She will also be recognized at an annual awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

In all, 48 high school students submitted their artwork from throughout the Seventh District, which encompasses parts of Richmond, New Kent, Henrico, Hanover, Chesterfield, Goochland, Louisa, Orange, Culpeper, and Spotsylvania.

“I want to thank all the art students for submitting their work.  It takes a lot of courage to pour your heart into something and then put it out there for all the world to see.  Each piece demonstrated an amazing level of talent,” Brat said.

He continued, “Hannah’s work was especially exceptional.  She has a bright future ahead of her.

“As an educator and a father, I know how important art can be in the lives of students – whether they’re creating it or just admiring it.  By helping us see the beauty – and even sometimes what’s ugly – in our world, art can stir the emotions, communicate important messages, or just provide enjoyment.  Art has also been used to chronicle images of history, helping us to visually connect with our past.”

Brat thanked Rick Olson, senior director of federal relations, and Francis Thompson, both of Capital One, for hosting the annual event.

He also recognized this year’s judges, who continue to be involved with the Congressional Art Competition each year:  Cherry Gardner, the principal specialist of fine arts at the Virginia Department of Education; Jeffrey Allison, the collection educator and statewide manager of programs and exhibitions at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; and Dr. David Burton, professor of art education at VCU.

Members of Congress hold the art competition in their districts each year for high school students.  More information can be found here.
