WASHINGTON - Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) issued the following statement after the House passed the bipartisan VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act, S. 1094 by a vote of 368-55. The legislation now heads to President Trump's desk to be signed into law.

“One of the earliest promises made by President Trump was to bring much-needed accountability and reforms to the Department of Veterans Affairs. It is clear the President cares deeply about quality of care our veterans receive when they return home to their communities.

This overwhelmingly bipartisan bill is long-overdue and will ensure the VA can accomplish its mission to care for our nation’s veterans. Poor-performing employees must be held accountable for their behavior. And when a whistleblower steps forward, it is imperative they are protected from retaliation.”

The VA Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act will:
- Expand the VA Secretary’s removal authority for VA employees and speed up the removal process
- Put in place additional whistleblower protections and give the Secretary the authority and responsibility to rescind bonuses or expense payments for corrupt employees
- Enhance protections for whistleblowers against retaliation
- Authorize the Secretary to directly appoint individuals to positions of Medical Center Director and Veterans Integrated Service Network
- Require reports on efforts to investigate VA employees and the outcomes and effectiveness of disciplinary actions
