WASHINGTON – As a member of the House Budget Committee, Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.) issued the following statement following the release of President Trump’s Fiscal Year 2018 Budget:

“President Trump’s budget is a serious attempt to bring federal spending under control. During the eight years of the Obama Administration, never once did Democrats even offer a budget that balanced in 75 years or reduced spending.

The request sent to Congress by the White House marks a bold and decisive shift away from excessive spending habits of Washington. I believe the most important component is ensuring we achieve at least a 3 percent rate of GDP growth. We cannot just reduce spending, but must also roll back excessive regulations to reduce bureaucracy and implement tax policies to grow our economy.

It is time to have a real debate about Washington’s spending priorities and balance the budget as soon as possible. Nearly $20 trillion dollars of debt and $100 trillion dollars in unfunded obligations to programs like Social Security and Medicare is not the inheritance I want to leave to our children and grandchildren. We must be honest with the American people. If we allow these programs to continue on auto-pilot spending and get too far in debt, there will be no safety net for the next generation of the most vulnerable. The Trump budget also contains key provisions to secure the border, rescue Americans from Obamacare’s failures, reduce government waste, build a strong military, and reform welfare programs while protecting the most vulnerable.”
