Washington, DC — Today, Representative Dave Brat (R-VA) announced he introduced a resolution in Congress (H. Res. 1112) to honor and congratulate Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Orange County, Va. upon the occasion of its 160th anniversary.

“Mt. Zion should take pride in its rich, meaningful history. From its inspiring beginnings to becoming a pillar in its community, Mt. Zion has been home to generations of faithful disciples living out the Gospel,” said Rep. Dave Brat. “It is an honor to recognize this special church community and give it the acknowledgement it's due.”

H. Res. 1112, the resolution introduced by Rep. Brat, also recognizes the rich history of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and its impact on Locust Grove, Virginia, and the surrounding community.

Mt. Zion Baptist Church formed out of a Prayer Band that met in the home of Maria and Peter Armstead in Locust Grove, Virginia before the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. In 1858, Reverend Tibbs (the Prayer Band’s third spiritual leader) named the newly built sanctuary Zion Baptist Church, later referred to as Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Colored), and is now called Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Since 1858, Mt. Zion’s congregants have continued in service to their Lord – believing, trusting, praising and growing in their faith.
