On Tuesday, President Obama announced that he plans to close the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. Congressman Dave Brat, R-Va., released the following statement:

“President Obama’s plan to close Guantanamo Bay puts U.S. homeland security at risk and is yet another example of his executive overreach. Prisoners released from Guantanamo have committed acts of terrorism around the globe, and one previous prisoner, Ibrahim Qosi, is now a leader of al Qaeda in Yemen.

“The President’s announcement today shows his continued attempts to circumvent the will of the people as manifested through Congress. Appropriations bills passed in Congress specifically forbid the closing of Guantanamo Bay and the National Defense Authorization Act of 2015 barred relocating those prisoners to the U.S.

“The vast majority of Americans oppose closing Guantanamo Bay because they know that doing so will enable terrorists to attack the U.S. The President should listen to Congress and the American people and withdraw his plan to close the base.”
