WASHINGTON — Tonight, Rep. Dave Brat, chairman of the Congressional Constitution caucus, released the following statement:

“Tonight, I voted to adopt H.Res. 1071 that states that allowing illegal immigrants the right to vote devalues and dilutes the voting power of United States Citizens.

“Unbelievably, San Francisco allows non-citizens, including illegal immigrants, to vote in school board elections if the person has a child under age 19. This practice is antithetical to the integrity of American elections. Each of the Constitutional amendments extending the right to vote (15th, 19th, 24th, and 26th) begins with: ‘The right of citizens of the United States [to vote],’ clearly indicating that this right is for citizens.

“Our Constitution is clear. We must not let this trend spread -- it threatens the foundations of our republic.”
