REGIONAL NEWS IN BRIEF

Rep. Dave Brat, R-Richmond, recently announced he was co-sponsoring the Secure Fence Restoration Act of 2015, requiring the entire southwest border fence to be completed no later than Dec. 31, 2017. The bill also seeks to prevent the U.S. Secretaries of the Interior and Agriculture from restricting the activities of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, according to a news release.

“The vast majority of the American people support border enforcement measures like this one,” Brat said. “This bill shows that Congress is listening to the American people’s concerns. Legislation like this is critical to our national security, as terrorist organizations like ISIS have already threatened to exploit our porous border.”

According to a 2009 Government accountability report, pedestrian fencing along the southern border has cost anywhere from $400,000 to $15.1 million per mile, averaging $3.9 million, the Associated Press reported in January.
