Rep. Dave Brat of Virginia introduced a resolution Thursday that would require the government to create a master spreadsheet containing appropriations and budget information of the past 10 fiscal years.

The legislative proposal – which was cosponsored by Reps. Justin Amash of Michigan, Mo Brooks of Alabama, Brian Babin of Texas, Walter Jones of North Carolina and Reid Ribble of Wisconsin – calls for the Appropriations Committee to organize the information it already possesses on Congressional spending programs.

Proponents of the measure said it would provide Americans with more oversight on the government’s actions.
The online spreadsheet would “be kept up-to-date and provided on the public web site of the committee in a downloadable, searchable, and sortable format,” according to the resolution’s text.

“Spending the people’s money wisely is one of our most fundamental duties as members of Congress,” Brat said in a statement. “The annual appropriations process, if carried out fully, provides an excellent opportunity for education and oversight.”

It has since been referred to the House Committee on Rules for consideration.
